22 May 2016 Heterotopic ossification (HO), which was first described by Riedel in 1883 (1), is formation of mature lamellar bone at an ectopic site in the body
(a) Grade I heterotopic ossification exhibits a rim of radiodense bone formation with a center of lucency. (b) As heterotopic ossification progresses, it may attach to the original bone, indicated as Grade II formation.
An easy, safe, and reproducible animal model that allows the study of heterotopic bone formation around vessels was successfully established. Heterotopic: In the wrong place, in an abnormal place, misplaced. From the Greek roots "hetero-" meaning "other" + "topos" meaning "place" = other place. For example, heterotopic bone formation is the formation of bone where it is not normally found, as in muscle.

2017-06-02 · Bone formation is termed “Ossification.” The terms heterotopic ossification and ectopic ossification are considered synonyms, and very commonly the abbreviation “HO” (for heterotopic ossification) is used. For reasons we do not fully understand, the elbow region is particularly prone to HO formation. Heterotopic ossification is a pathological condition in which bone forms in nonskeletal tissues. [2,3] Formation of this ectopic bone in soft tissues requires precursor cells that have the potential to differentiate into bone or cartilage (or both), a conducive tissue microenvironment, and an inducing event to initiate the cellular and molecular events that lead to bone formation.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) — the formation of bone outside the normal skeleton — can occur in soft tissue and is usually found within muscular, adipose, or nonmuscle fibrous or connective tissue. Ectopic bone formation is the only example of complete recapitulation of an organ system, replete with hard tissue, vascular and marrow elements. 2009).

Characteristically exhibiting in the big toe at birth, it causes the formation of heterotopic bone throughout the body over the course of the sufferer's life, causing chronic pain and eventually leading to the immobilisation and fusion of most of the skeleton by abnormal growths of bone. Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is the abnormal growth of bone in the non-skeletal tissues including muscle, tendons or other soft tissue. When HO develops, new bone grows at three times the normal rate, resulting in jagged, painful joints.

Heterotopic ossification refers to the presence of bone in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist (extraskeletal bone). Lesions range from small clinically insignificant foci of ossification to large deposits of bone that cause pain and restriction of function. On this page:
Formation of heterotopic bone (mostly in muscle) or peri-articular ossifications (around capsule and ligaments) around the elbow is common. It is a known sequela of elbow trauma (up to 37%), severe burns, or injury to the central nervous system. Severity ranges from minor clinically insignificant flecks of bone to complete bony ankylosis.
